What is Green Building?
Green building is the practice of building more sustainable, healthier, and more energy efficient buildings. There is no one single way to build a green building. There are many ways for homebuilders to go green & many programs available to certify homes as being green built.
What goes into a green home?
Green homes incorporate environmental considerations and resource efficiency into every step of the building and development process to minimize environmental impact. The design, construction, and operation of a home must focus on energy and water efficiency, resource efficient building design and materials, indoor environmental quality, and must take the home's overall impact on the environment into account. However, many of the processes and technologies that go into a green home happen behind the scenes and behind the walls.
What can a homebuyer look for in a green building?
- Energy-Efficient Features
- Water-Efficient Features
- Resource-Efficient Features
- Indoor Air Quality Features
- Third Party Verifications through nationally accredited programs
Here are some links to nationally accredited green building programs. These third party certifications are practiced by many of our local homebuilders. Please search the individual websites to find a green builder in our area:

The National Association of Home Builders is bringing green to the mainstream with the NAHB National Green Building Program (NAHB Green) for all home builders and remodelers. The technologies and practices required to build a green home to NAHB green criteria will result in lower costs to operate the home. Explore this site to get started.

Energystar™ is a green program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Products in more than 50 categories (including newly constructed homes) are eligible for the ENERGY STAR certification. They use less energy, save money, and help protect the environment. To earn the ENERGY STAR, a home must be at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and include additional energy-saving features that typically make them 20-30% more efficient than standard homes.

The U.S. Green Building Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to everyone within a generation. Their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices.
