HALL OF FAME

Jay Buchert

Jay Buchert

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - The farms in Delhi Township were becoming subdivisions and new homes were being built there in the late 1940’s, and they were the most interesting thing happening during my early years. My earliest interest was in this development work and the home construction taking place in the community. Looking back, I never remember wanting to be anything other than a ‘Home Builder’

ROLES HELD THROUGHOUT CAREER - Starting at 15 years old, I became a carpenter’s helper. New home plans interested me, and I became a ‘self-taught’ draftsman. I drew my first set of plans used for a building permit at age 16. I attended OCAS after high school and was a co-op with an engineering firm that was designing the interstate system in Greater Cincinnati. I started in the engineering department of a lumber company following school.  Later, I began selling lumber for the company and became an Associate Member of the HBA in 1964. In 1966, I partnered with a framing carpenter friend and built my first home. At age 25 (1967) I was hired by one of my builder customers to manage his company developing land, building homes and apartments. At that time, I became the company’s Builder Representative to both the HBA of Greater Cincinnati and Apartment Association that was the part of the HBA at that time. In 1969, I became one of the original stockholders in RyCrest Homes (Later Crest Communities) as the Manager of their Towne Homes Division and continuing my involvement in the HBA. In 1971, I built and managed the company’s Lumber Fabrication Division - Crest Component Systems. In 1973, at age 30 I started Jay Buchert Builder, Inc. In 1980, it became American Heritage Construction and Development, Corp.

FAVORITE PART OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE HBA - USA Homeownership is the most unique opportunity for its citizens in the world. Being involved in, and a continuation of Homeownership provides ‘builders’ with a true feeling of pride and purpose in being a part of that ‘special uniqueness’. Homeownership is also an important element of the ‘American Dream’- getting a good education, marrying your sweetheart, and having a family – and owning a home of your own.

FAVORITE MEMORY - Having Orville Brown, the HBA Executive Director (1958 -1988), as a special friend and mentor.  Much of my success as a builder, as well as HBA and NAHB involvement, can be attributed to Orville’s guidance and sound advice over the years.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - Through troubled time as well as the good, it is the goal of our Association to accomplish – as a group – what we cannot accomplish for ourselves as individuals. Working together we must preserve the freedom of homeownership, not so much for ourselves but for the generations that will follow us and not so they can do what we do in the way of homeownership, but so they can do so much more.

PERSONAL LIFE - Linda and I have been married for 57 years and dated for four years prior to our marriage. We worked side by side to create our business. We have four grown children and four grandchildren – all boys. All our kids had some responsibility in the business while growing up. Our son Chris is in the business today and a member of the current HBA Board. His son Christopher is in his second year at the University of Kentucky and works in the business with his dad when not in school.

HOBBIES - During 50 years in business and industry involvement, I never had much leisure time. However, with retirement 15 years ago I took up golf and Linda, and I play regularly while enjoying the golf and country clubs connected with our three homes. Terrace Park in Cincinnati, The Sea Island Club in Georgia, and the Moorings Golf & Country Club in Naples, Florida. We have been blessed by the career I chose in many, many ways.

SUPERPOWER - I would become CEO of a Bank and loan money to young builders.

Stuart Cowan

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - I started driving nails around ten, grew up remodeling and building a few homes. I wanted to learn more than my own little cocoon. At my first HBA meeting I was standing in the back of the room, Elda walked up and we talked about why I was there and getting involved. The rest is history.

ROLES HELD THROUGHOUT CAREER - Served as chair of many committees throughout the HBA. The most fun was HOMEARAMA chair. I was President of the HBA of Greater Cincinnati and the OHBA.  I served as Committee Chairs for Jay Buchert and Charlie Ruma at NAHB. Tim Hensley

Tim Hensley

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - I’ve always been drawn to the idea of creating something tangible, something that starts as a vision and becomes a home where families build their lives. The residential construction industry allows me to combine creativity, organization, and problem-solving in a hands-on way. I love being part of the process that turns design concepts into real spaces, and I’m inspired by the teamwork and craftsmanship it takes to bring each project to life.

ROLES HELD THROUGHOUT CAREER - Prior to starting Hensley Homes, I worked as a supervisor and salesman in the production home industry. In 1985, my brother Greg and I started Hensley Homes. I performed as president and sales manager. Today I function purely as the President.

WHAT YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY - Seeing a project come full circle—from plans on paper to a finished home that a family will live in and enjoy for years. There’s something incredibly rewarding about being part of that transformation and knowing that every detail, decision, and collaboration contributes to creating something lasting and meaningful.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - Be patient and stay curious. Every project, even the tough ones, will teach you something valuable. Pay attention to the details but also keep sight of the big picture—how your work contributes to creating someone’s home. Find good mentors, listen more than you speak at first, and remember that reputation and reliability go a long way in this business. Stand behind what you do.

HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED IN THE HBA - I joined the HBA as an employee in 1978 working for Jay Buchert Homes, my brother-in-law.

POSITIONS OR LEADERSHIP ROLES HELD WITHIN THE HBA – I became a member of the Board of Directors starting in mid-1990’s. I was voted in as a member of the Executive Committee in 2002 – 2006, serving as President in 2004.

Abby is married to Kyle Markle, and they have two wonderful children, Lila and Luca. John and Jodi have four wonderful children—Tatum, Gunner, Luna, and Everly.

HOBBIES - Favorite hobbies are horses, golf, and spending time with our children and grandchildren at our farm.

FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION - Our favorite travel destination is Sarasota, Florida.

SUPERPOWER - The ability to visit Heaven and talk with The Lord.

ROLES HELD THROUGHOUT CAREER - I was a real estate sales agent with Sibcy Cline Realtors and eventually became a manager. After I left there, I then became the division sales manager for M/I Homes. In 1999, I started my own building company, Vineyard Homes, with Jim Hassman as my partner. In 2020 Rick Kimbler and I started Fall Creek Homes. Now I am semi-retired but still building homes for acquaintances I have met through the HBA.

WHAT YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY - Meeting new people and forming lasting friendships within the industry.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - Work hard, be fair and honest.

HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED IN THE HBA - I joined the HBA Sales and Marketing Council and Associates Council through Sibcy Cline Realtors.

Steve Hunt

Steve Hunt

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - I graduated from law school in 1980 and started working for the law firm of Aronoff and Rosen, which later became Aronoff Rosen & Hunt. My legal practice involved the representation of builders, developers, and homeowner’s associations. One of the clients that we represented was The Drees Company, and I got to know Donald Misrach who was actively involved in the HBA. Don had me interview with the Board of Directors, and I became counsel for the HBA in the 1990’s.

FAVORITE PART OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE HBA - One of my favorite parts in being involved in the HBA is getting to know the many builders, developers and board members who provide great service to the HBA. In the 1990’s and 2000’s, I was often involved in HBA trips, and it was great to get to know key people involved in the industry.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - For a Cincinnati builder, developer, or contractor, I think it is imperative that they join the HBA because of the great services and connections that the HBA provides to its members and the community.

PERSONAL LIFE - I recently turned 70 and have been married for 30 years. We have two children. My daughter lives in Durango, CO and my son lives in Manhattan. We really enjoy going to visit them. Unfortunately, we do not have any grandchildren yet!

HOBBIES - Playing golf and traveling.

FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION - My wife and I recently got back from a two-week cruise to Norway and Iceland, which was fabulous. Since I am now only working part time at our new law firm, Keating Muething and Klekamp, my wife and I plan to do a fair amount of traveling over the next few years.

I think a great travel destination would be to go to Finland to see to see the Northern Lights.

SUPERPOWER - Flying so I could save on airfare.

Bob Lucke

Bob Lucke

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - I grew up immersed in the home building industry, beginning my career as a framing carpenter for my father’s company, Lucke and Strassel Builders. This hands-on experience and dedication led me to several key roles within the business before being named President of Lucke Homes in 1980. In 1985, I founded Robert Lucke Homes, launching a brand known throughout Greater Cincinnati for quality, integrity, and personal service.

ROLES HELD THROUGHOUT CAREER - At just 30 years old, I became one of the youngest board members of the Home Builders Association of Greater Cincinnati, and in 1987, I was elected President of the organization. In recognition of my contributions to the industry and the HBA, the Board bestowed the Honorary Lifetime Member status to me in 2009.

Throughout my career, I was involved in every contract the company undertook, maintaining a strong commitment to excellence in customer service. My leadership roles extended beyond the homebuilding business through volunteer efforts with Boys and Girls Hope, Easter Seals, the Sycamore Athletic Club, and as a coach for the Sycamore Comets.

Though now retired, I continue to serve as Chairman of the Board of the Robert Lucke Group. I believe in a strong work ethic and understand the value of quality products and workmanship – and that’s what makes the Robert Lucke Group stand out. I’m very happy with our longevity and reputation.

PERSONAL LIFE – I’m enjoying retirement in Florida, and I am the proud father of four children, grandfather to eleven, and great-grandfather to two.

Elda Marshall

Elda Marshall

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - My career in the building industry began on April 1980 when I started working at the Home Builders Association as Secretary to then Executive Director Orville Brown.

ROLES HELD THROUGHOUT CAREER - Orville loved titles so in a short time I became his Executive Secretary and eventually his Executive Assistant.

In 1987, I was named Assistant Executive Director of the HBA, and I remained in that position until 1989 when Orville Brown retired. Following the recommendation of the Search Committee and upon approval by the Board of Directors, I was hired as Executive Director of the HBA - a position I held until the end of 2005 when I retired.

INVOLVEMENT WITH HBA - Working for the HBA was a wonderful time for me and I truly enjoyed coming to work every day, as there was always something new and exciting happening and I can without a doubt say there was "never a dull moment."

FAVORITE PART OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE HBA - The thing that gave me the most pleasure through the years was meeting and getting to know so many wonderful people and being able to "pick the brains" of so many successful business-minded individuals. I am certain that the information garnered from each of those interactions was the key to my success.

The most important factor in the many successes we enjoyed during my tenure was the HBA staff. It is easy to schedule and plan for events but if you don't have people with you who work hard and work together to make things happen, plans mean nothing. Thanks to the above and beyond efforts of each of them we had some great meetings and events that were enjoyed by all who attended.

FAVORITE MEMORY - I was asked to cite a favorite memory of my time with the HBA, but there have been so many happy times and wonderful memories it would be difficult for me to pinpoint one that meant more than the others. However, there is one significant memory that I had while on HBA business that is not directly related to our Association. In September 2005 we were in Columbus, OH for the Fall NAHB Board Meeting at which President George W. Bush was the keynote speaker. Following his talk, President Bush came down into the audience to meet and greet NAHB members. Maureen McDermott and I were seated in the second row right beside the podium and he came straight down to us. I felt like a teenager about to meet my music idol and when he took my hand, looked directly into my eyes, and said "yes ma’am" I was speechless for the first time in my life. I finally recovered enough to say, "good luck,” but it was something I will never forget!

PERSONAL LIFE - I have two sons Donald and Douglas, four granddaughters Gina, Sadie, Taylor, and Maddy, one great-grandson Royal and three great-granddaughters Olivia, Nelly and Pope.

Don Misrach

Don Misrach

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION – I worked for The Drees Company for 17 years. I started as Controller and later became Executive Vice President/Secretary/Treasurer, responsible for all single-family operations in Kentucky and Ohio including land development. While at Drees, I also became a CPA (Certified Public Accountant). I saw a market need to supply developed lots to builders and left Drees to start Cobblestone Development Company in 1991. I’ve always enjoyed the many phases of the industry – working with landowners, engineers, contractors, and builders to develop communities where individuals and families could enjoy and grow. Cobblestone operated for 30 years developing 30 residential subdivisions in four counties in Ohio and three counties in Kentucky, providing approximately 3,000 residential lots to builders.  Foxborough Subdivision, developed by Cobblestone, was the site of the 2011 HOMEARAMA show.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - Work for a builder or developer to learn as much as possible about all phases of the building process, from development to finished homes. Try not to get stuck in one phase of the industry.  Ask questions, learn, and only then venture out on your own.

INVOLVEMENT WITH HBA - Elected to the Board of the HBA in 1987; asked to join the Executive Committee in 1988 by Orville Brown; served as President of the HBA in 1990; First Chairman of the Asset/Audit Committee in 1992, held this office for 13 years. I was President of the Ohio Valley Development Council in 1998 & 1999. I chaired a multitude of committees over the years. I am a Life Director of the National Association of meHHHomHome Builders.

PERSONAL LIFE – I have been married to wife Barbara for over 50 years. I have one son - Craig, one daughter – Emily, and one granddaughter – Poppy.

HOBBIES - Enjoys golf & tennis.

FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION - Spends most winters in Florida with Barbara.

Bob Rhein

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - I was inspired to pursue a career in residential construction by LUCK.  After growing up in and graduating from college in Chicago I went to work for a national company.

ROLES HELD THROUGHOUT CAREER - My role was to assist in the building of various projects via the permit approval process and actual construction. After a while I got tired of bouncing around from city to city (none as urban as Chicago) and wanted to return to Chicago. I started checking “want ads” in Chicago newspapers and saw an ad for assistant director of development for Kaufman and Broad Homes (now KB Homes) for their Chicago division. Unlike today, I could not easily find out much about them. However, after submitting my resume, I got an interview, found out their division was doing over 1,000 homes per year. and I got the job.

After KB Homes, I became Director of Development for the Chicago division of US HOMES. They also were selling over 1,000 homes per year.

Next was working for Kanter Corporation in Cincinnati as President of Forest Park Inc. Back then this company owned ALL the undeveloped land in the City of Forest Park. We also did joint ventures with Towne Properties i.e. Carpenters Run in Blue Ash.  This development started the residential transition of Blue Ash.

In 1982, I established my initial company. Over the subsequent 40+ years we developed scores of developments in greater Cincinnati working with major, medium and small sized builders to create communities designed to stand and, in fact, have stood the “test of time”!  My team and I were honored by being chosen to host 10 HOMEARAMAs. We were the proud recipient of the initial HBA DEVELOPER OF THE YEAR AWARD as well as several other awards. Within the City of Mason, we developed numerous communities consisting of (in total) several thousand lots. In recognition of our major role in transforming Mason from a nice but sleepy bedroom community to the vibrant community it is today, I received a “Key to the City” award. In addition to greater Cincinnati, we had development operating divisions in Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh, North Carolina. I was a co-founder of St. Lawrence Homes with operating divisions in Charlotte and Raleigh. Many, many communities but four are my favorites – three located in Cincinnati: Long Cove, Heritage Club, and Four Bridges. The fourth is NorthStone, a 1,000- home golf community in Charlotte.

An original member, and for 12 years thereafter, I was a member of the Banks Working Group. The original group of five members was appointed by the Mayor and County Commissioners and chaired by Reds owner, Bob Castellini. The BWG was responsible for implementing and coordinating the transformation of what was a ground level parking lot located in a flood plain between the Reds and Bengals stadiums to the vibrant mixed-use development that exists today!

Currently, I am essentially retired spending most of my time in Florida. However, I still have some income producing properties and occasionally participate as an investor in new projects.

WHAT YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY - The special personal and business relationships that enabled the creation of major, unique communities such as Long Cove, Heritage Club and Four Bridges.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - Socialize with your peers. Listen and learn! Get involved with the local HBA.

In making plans for financial success: NEVER FORGET - PAPER PROFITS ARE NOTHING BUT POSITIVE CASH FLOW IS EVERYTHING!!!!

HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED IN THE HBA - While with Kanter I got involved with Towne Properties. One of its original founders was very involved and introduced me to our HBA’s founder, and long-time EO, Orville Brown. After spending time with Orville, I was hooked!

POSITIONS OR LEADERSHIP ROLES HELD WITHIN THE HBA – I was elected to the HBA Board of Directors, serving as Secretary in 1986; Treasurer in 1987; President in 1988; and Chairman of the Board 1989.  I was also Chairman of the Executive Committee in 1990.

As President, I chaired the search committee for new EO upon retirement of Orville Brown. After numerous interviews, the committee recommended Elda Marshall, who performed admirably for many years prior, until her retirement.

FAVORITE PART OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE HBA - Interacting with other members, learning from them and making lasting friendships.

FAVORITE MEMORY - Organizing Orville Brown’s retirement party, great party for a great person! Also, the Annual Executive Leadership Trips.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN THE HBA - All industries need protectors and proponents. The HBA locally, state, and nationally is ours. For the HBA to succeed in its role, bright, dedicated people need to get involved!

PERSONAL LIFE - I have been married 47 years. Both my children are involved in the homebuilding industry. My son is a key employee associate with John Henry Homes. My daughter is Executive Director of the Atlanta Land Trust. The Trust’s mission is, by maintaining ownership in the land, to provide “affordable, not subsidized” home ownership!

HOBBIES – Golf, travel, dinners and conversation with friends. I volunteer as a math tutor in the Naples, Florida public school system.

FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION – Europe

SUPERPOWER – Eliminate poverty in the world.

Alan Schmidt Sr

Alan Schmidt, Sr.

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - My father Gerhard was a home builder, and from an early age, my brother Jim and I gained valuable experience working with him. In 1974, at the age of eighteen, I built my first house in partnership with Jim, who was then completing his final year of high school.

Home building has been both my profession and my passion. With unwavering support from my wife, Judy, we have navigated the large challenges of this industry and celebrated successes together. Achieving success in home building requires genuine passion, as it provides the resilience needed to overcome obstacles and reach one’s goals.

ROLES HELD THROUGHOUT CAREER - In 1979, I joined the Home Builders Association. In 1981, I participated in my first of five HOMEARAMA’s with Landmark Communities. I served on various committees and was chairman of several committees - Building Codes in 1998, OSHA Committee in 1994, Warranty and Industry Standards in 1994, Education Committee in 1996, HOMEARAMA Site Selection Committee in 1998, and HOMEARAMA Chairman in 1999. I also served on the Executive Committee, and I had the privilege of being the President of the Association in 1999.  Currently. I am serving on the Asset Management Committee.

WHAT YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY - Joining the Home Builders Association as a young home builder provided me with a sense of belonging and allowed me to expand my knowledge beyond the practical aspects of construction. The Association afforded opportunities to forge lasting friendships and enjoy memorable experiences, one of the most significant being my participation in the 1981 HOMEARAMA. That initial event was exciting and offered insight into the collaborative effort required to achieve a shared objective.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - Active involvement in the HBA is vital. It enables professionals to exchange ideas, share lessons learned, and build networks. Programs such as the National Association of Home Builders’ Builder 20 are invaluable for professional development and peer support.

PERSONAL LIFE - Judy and I have been married for 49 years and have three sons: Alan Jr., David, and Adam. Alan Jr. is now President and manages our home building company with great dedication, while our other two sons have pursued careers outside the industry. We are also proud grandparents to Trevor and Olivia, both of whom are currently in college. There is a strong possibility that Trevor may enter the family business, thus continuing our legacy into a fourth generation.

HOBBIES - Outside of work, Judy and I enjoy traveling. One of my personal goals is to visit every stadium where the Reds and Bengals play.

Bill Weber

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - I started my career as a bricklayer. In high school, I became interested in construction work and quickly found that laying bricks came naturally to me.

One thing led to another, and right after graduation I got married and decided to pursue bricklaying as my full-time career. Most people know me from the construction industry in general, but bricklaying was where it all began.

WHAT YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY - Looking back, the industry taught me more than I ever expected. I wasn’t the smartest person in the room, but bricklaying showed me the value of patience, precision, and hard work. The work was tedious, but it gave me a strong foundation––literally and figuratively. I worked for Bobby Lucke and had the opportunity to be part of some incredible projects.

Over time, when it rained and we couldn’t lay brick, I started helping in other areas of construction. That exposure allowed me to learn multiple trades. Eventually, I moved into the garage door business. I started installing doors, then became a service technician, moved into sales, and eventually into management.

HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED IN THE HBA - A major turning point in my career was attending a national HBA trade show in New Orleans. It was the first time I had ever traveled anywhere for work, and it opened my eyes to an entirely new world. I was impressed by the leaders in the industry, and I met many people who would later influence my career. That show marked the beginning of a new era for me—I was no longer “just” a bricklayer; I was becoming a garage door professional.

As my career progressed, my wife Rosemary and I decided to start our own company. We began with very little. It was soon named after our two young daughters, and my wife Rosemary typed all our quotes. Everything we started with was stored in the backyard of our house. Back then it was important to get your name and number out there. When we needed to get listed in the phone book (which was very important back then), we named the company AE so it would appear at the top of the directory, it also happened to be the first initials of our girls’ names Amy & Erin. Over the years, the business grew steadily. Adam, who you all may be more familiar with, came later and started out in the schedule room then grew over the years into the President of the company.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN THE HBA - We learned from industry leaders like Jack Wieland, who taught me that if you want to be successful, you must really know your industry. AE eventually became a top dealer with Clopay, leading the industry in opener sales. I served on the Clopay board and helped contribute to product improvements. When decorative doors became popular, our involvement with the HBA helped us grow right alongside the industry.

Family has always been at the center of the business. I have three children, eleven grandchildren, and many family members have worked for us over the years. Some of them are no longer with us, but together we built something successful. Being involved with the HBA not only helped our business growth but introduced me to lifelong friends.

FAVORITE MEMORY - Looking back, what stands out most isn’t just the career growth, but the people I’ve met along the way. Through the HBA, I made personal friendships that I still cherish today. Outside of work, I enjoy boating and riding motorcycles, activities I’ve shared with many of those same friends.

We built a great life through hard work in this industry. We created opportunities not only for ourselves, but also for our children and grandchildren. My hope is that we’ve built generational wealth that will continue to support them long after we’re gone.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - Take it one step at a time. Pay attention and learn everything you can. Start within your means. Don’t assume you need to follow someone else’s path—learn the trade and understand how things work. College can be valuable, but I believe in combining business education with hands-on trade experience. Nobody becomes successful without doing the hard work. Some of the hardest-working people you’ll ever meet are in construction.

SUPERPOWER - To protect my family and ensure that nothing is ever impossible for them.  And, with hard work, determination, and the right people around goals become reality.

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - My inspiration to become a builder stems from my father, who was a full-time real estate broker.  When he found a suitable piece of land, he would build apartments.

ROLES HELD THROUGHOUT CAREER - I worked for my father part-time starting at the age of 11.  After high school, I began working for a carpenter, then I spent a short stint in the Marine Corp, before starting as a builder.

WHAT YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY - Being able to produce a single-family home on time, on budget, and quality controlled.  The feeling of accomplishment that followed these efforts.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - My advice for someone entering the industry would be to formulate a good business plan and surround yourself with knowledgeable people.  No one has complete knowledge of every aspect of the industry; rely on good people.

HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED IN THE HBA - My involvement with the HBA began when Larry Paul Jr. asked me to join in 1976, and I accepted his offer.

POSITIONS OR LEADERSHIP ROLES HELD WITHIN THE HBA – My positions with the HBA included becoming a Board Member in 1978. I was elected to the Executive Committee in 1980 and became President in 1983. I co-chaired HOMEARAMA in 1977 and 1978 and became Chairman in 1979. I held the title of Chairman for almost 20 years. I served on many different committees, including Board Member of OHBA and National HBA. In 1989, I was elected Secretary of the Executive Committee and became President for a second term in 1993.

FAVORITE PART OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE HBA - My favorite part of being involved with the HBA is the friendships that I developed, and the information shared with other members. It is an extremely rewarding to experience builders networking together and yet be competitors on a daily basis.

FAVORITE MEMORY - My favorite memories of the HBA are HOMEARAMA, and working with the builders, tradesmen, communities, and cities to build a show that we can all be proud of.  It is important to mention that HOMEARAMA provides a much-needed income to support the HBA endeavors throughout the year.

Working with the HBA staff, Orville Brown, Elda Marshall, Karen Pfeiffer, and so many others who kept our HBA strong for so many years.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN THE HBA - Being involved with the HBA has always been very important to me, as I believe every person owes time and money to the profession in which they work.  HBA is only as strong as its members.  Strength is in numbers. An Association can do more as a group than a person can do individually.

PERSONAL LIFE - My wife Sue and I have been married for 56 years.  Sue worked in our company for many years – from 1979 until we retired. We have three children, Mike, 54, Jeff 50, and Erin (McKinney) 48.  Jeff and Mike are owners of Wieland Builders, LLC, and are members of the HBA. We have eight grandchildren from the ages of 5 to 26, and one great granddaughter.

HOBBIES - Hobbies include watching our grandkids play sports, racing, motorcycles, boating, collector cars, and golf.

FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION - We have traveled many places over the years, however, safari in South Africa was special.

SUPERPOWER - If I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to try for peace around the world, and cure cancer.

CAREER IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - My family built houses from my grandparents to my mom and dad.

ROLES HELD THROUGHOUT CAREER - I started cleaning jobs and sweeping out homes when I was eleven. While in college in my co-op, I worked for a builder where we did everything ourselves from pouring fosters, laying block, framing, etc. When I returned home, I began as a supervisor, then slowly went into estimating while running jobs and eventually became owner of the company with my brother.

WHAT YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY - There is a great deal of hustle, knowledge, and hard work ethic that has been instilled in me through this industry. I love the creativity I get to work with in the homes we build. I love the relationships I get to build with our customers that carry on after we're done with the project. I enjoy the camaraderie with other builders and trades people we have in our industry locally, across Ohio, and United States.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION - You have to hustle, and you have to know your numbers. You have to understand construction all the way through, and you have to understand running a business. A lot of money comes through your hands that is not yours. Pay attention to your own economy and nobody else's and don't be a jerk.

HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED IN THE HBA - I began working for the HBA at HOMEARAMA when I was 11 years old, setting up and taking down the show. My dad was a builder and chair of the HOMEARAMA, so my friends and I worked it through high school.

POSITIONS OR LEADERSHIP ROLES HELD WITHIN THE HBA - After I graduated college and returned home, I chaired my first HOMEARAMA in 2000 at Rivers Bend. I was elected to the HBA board in 2001. I chaired the Membership Committee with Dan Frey for a few years, chaired HOMEARAMA for several years, and was elected to the Executive Committee in 2003. Through the years I served on many different committees and chaired many as well.

FAVORITE PART OF BEING INVOLVED IN THE HBA - I have always enjoyed being around other folks in our industry. I enjoy the camaraderie with other builders and learning from each other. I enjoyed being able to build relationships with government leaders who influence our industry along with trying to prevent ridiculous regulation.

FAVORITE MEMORY - I have so many memories that go back to my childhood from when we used to hang at HOMEARAMA after the show was over to the day, I became President of the Association.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN THE HBA - We are a trade-based group whose main purpose is to improve and fight for our industry. We are a group of few that sustain greatness in our industry for many. It's not for everyone, but there should be some sort of giving back from anyone involved.

PERSONAL LIFE - My wife Shannon and I have been married for 17 years, we have two kids, Cody 14, Rayna 11. We live on our cattle operation in Lebanon, Ohio.

HOBBIES - We enjoy our time with the kids' sports and activities along with many of the other parents. We spend a lot of time with the kids 4-H projects showing cattle. We attend Four Corners Church in West Chester. Our kids and the farm keep us busy.

FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION - We try to pick a new place to visit each year for our family vacation.

SUPERPOWER - I would like to be able to read people's minds.
